Packaging Needs To Go Green Why Over 50% Of Customers Are Taking Green Packaging Into Account

How often do you think about the packaging you use?

For some this is a no-brainer. Packaging is everything in a purchase and a major way to communicate with a chosen brand. For others packaging is just a means to an end and can come in just about any form…as long as it’s convenient. The conversation about packaging today has since started to grow, expanding around topics relating to environmental awareness, conservation and pricing. Thermoformed clamshells are widely considered one of the most efficient ways to package all sorts of items, ranging from ammo storage cases to safety glasses cases.

Perhaps packaging could be something else you consider on your way to a purchase. Let’s take a look at and see why this is such an important detail to so many businesses and consumers.

Environmental awareness isn’t a trend. It’s a way of keeping the world we live in sustainable enough for future generations. Many estimates have been made about the state of the planet over the coming decades if we don’t start taking the eco-friendly approach seriously. A series of environmental studies recently concluded over 30 million metric tons of plastic waste are improperly disposed. Around 150 million metric tons of plastic currently reside in the world’s oceans, to boot. A 2016 Ellen MacArthur Foundation report found out by 2050 there may be more plastic than fish in the ocean!

The year 2013 alone boasted astronomical figures. Of the nearly 80 million metric tons of plastic packaging produced, over 40% were merely dumped in landfills instead of being recycled and repurposed. Another 30% were ‘leaked’ into the surrounding environment to pollute both land and sea. This causes a domino effect that impacts plantlife, wildlife and, eventually, human communities. While these can seem like some pretty staggering numbers, all hope is not lost. Small actions can have big impacts and this is where thermoformed clamshells and patented packaging come in.

Multiple studies have been conducted to better figure out how consumers are responding to the need for green. A 2016 West Rock Consumer Insights Study, for starters, revealed over 65% of consumers to have tried out a new product because the packaging caught their eye. This can be a label describing eco-friendly intent or an interesting design that promised more bang for their buck. This same study also saw 45% of respondents stating they purchased a product because the packaging was environmentally friendly. This could be the cultural shift we need to make a difference.

Today over 50% of people around the world will make their purchase decisions partially due to packaging or entirely. That should tell you of the shift in attitude when it comes to eco-friendly living. Despite this, just 15% of consumers in a recent study felt businesses were actually doing what was needed to leave a green impact. Not only do you need to utilize clamshell packaging solutions, you need to make sure customers know what you’re doing to make the world a cleaner place to live. Thermoformed clamshells are efficient, eco-friendly and an overall wonderful way of packaging your products.

A blister package that folds onto itself to leave a little pocket of space is referred to as a ‘clamshell’. This is used to package all sorts of items, ranging from medicine to small toys. Customizable packaging can be tweaked even further to fully embrace the unique items your business is crafting. This can be a fishing utility box, a 223 ammo box or just green packaging to keep the product safe when not in use. The sky’s the limit when it comes to leaving a green impact and it’s our actions that will shape the future to come.

Packaging, thermoformed clamshells and retail packaging are an essential part of everyday life. Why can’t it be a green one, too?
